The S&F documentation for 8.3 is very limited compared to 8.1. 8.1 was very detailed and explained the data flow and the impact of the settings between memory and hard disk stages.

If I just read 8.3, its not even clear what stage 1 and stage 2 is, as it is not explained. Based on the release notes, 8.3 also improved the S&F in general, but its not documented.
